Maine isn't just the small coastal towns you've read so much about, but there's also a wide range of rural inland landscapes to help you come back to the land and reconnect with nature and the wild.
Peaceful, outstandingly beautiful, and far from the white noise of the city, rural Maine is the perfect way to escape the rapid pace of living that can wrap us up if we're not careful.
Things you'll love
Maine has always had a burgeoning back to the land movement, and that hasn't changed lately. We constantly see people moving away from the cities to reconnect with the land and how it speaks to us. While much of the coast is small towns, inland Maine is filled with rolling hills, valleys, forests, and Rich farmland that was reclaimed from the forests hundreds years ago. Whether you're looking to start a hobby garden, a full-on farm, or just wanting to have some peace and quiet without any nearby neighbors, these inland areas might be right for you: Waldo, Brooks, Belmont, Searsmont, Appleton, Hope, Monroe, Morrill, Knox, Freedom, Montville
Challenges
While there is definitely something special about living on the land and further apart from civilization, there are challenges there as well. Driving times are a little bit longer to get groceries or eat out, and socialization needs to become more intentional should you be looking for it. Town services also tend to be more limited, and there are more than a few dirt roads that become difficult to traverse in a wet spring.
